If you are enrolled in the WEB section of this course during either the Fall or Spring semester, then it is important that you understand what is on this page:
Even though it is a WEB section, there is a time associated with the class (T/R 3:05-4:20pm in the spring and T/R 4:35-5:50pm in the fall). This means that you should have that time available in your schedule to participate in the class.
This is NOT a WEB class that you take at your own pace.
Regarding attending class in 100 Thomas or watching the class online, there are THREE OPTIONS for you:
Option One: Watch the class live online. It is streamed to YouTube. You can go HERE to find the link or just go to our channel: www.youtube.com/soc119
If you decide to watch it live, then you will submit a Class Reflection Video Assignment (CRVA), which is three different 2.5 minute video reflections about the content of the class. (See the syllabus for more information)
Attendance is an assignment and so you MUST submit the CRVA for every class.
If you watch live on YouTube, then you can participate in the chat by signing into YouTube
Option Two: Come to 100 Thomas and be in the classroom (T/R at 4:35pm in the fall or 3:05pm in the spring)
If you come to 100 Thomas, then you DO NOT have to submit the Class Reflection Video Assignment after each class.
You can receive your attendance points by taking the Canvas Attendance Quiz while in class (which is simply a single question asking if you are present and you will take it on your phone at the beginning and end of class).
You NEVER have to inform us whether you are coming to class in 100 Thomas or watching online (and then submitting the CRVA)
Unless you enjoy making these videos, it is much easier to just come to the Thomas Building.
And no, you cannot watch the class from home and take the Canvas Attendance Quiz from home.
You can switch up and come to Thomas on Tuesdays and choose to put some hours in at your job Thursday afternoons. It doesn’t matter to us because you are in the WEB section and you have that flexibility.
Obviously, the two class attendance minimum that applies to Section 001 does NOT apply to you because you can write as many CRVAs as you would like.
If you do not know anything about SOC 119 and are wondering about whether it's worth your time to come to class, then you can watch THIS trailer and decide for yourself.
Option Three: Watch a recording of the lectures at a time other than T/R 3:05-4:20pm in the spring or T/R 4:35-5:50pm in the fall.
You will still have to submit the three Class Reflection Video Assignments, but perhaps you'll decide that you'd rather get some hours in at your job on T/R afternoons and then watch the class and complete the CRVA at a later time in the following seven days (since you only have one week to submit it).
Given Option Three, you might be wondering why there is a day/time connected to the WEB version of the class. This is because we wanted to give you the option of attending in person and not having to write the CRVA.
Other than this single issue, ALL other requirements of the class are the same for both the in-person version (Section 001) and WEB version (Section 002) of the SOC 119 class.
